Streatham: Progress thrown back in its heartland

Streatham CLP, in South London, is the heartland of Progress – which runs Lambeth council with an iron hand. Yet in ward elections this week the left succeeded in giving them a shock.

The left won a host of ward officer positions, including four out of eight ward secretaries. In terms of delegates to the General Committee, comrades report the right have 55, the left have 38 and there are about 15 not clearly affiliated. With union delegates, it could be extremely close.

To put it mildly, this is extremely significant, a major shift. More information very soon.

  1. A quick comment – as we understand it the left doubled its delegates from 30 to 60 and its percentage of the GC from a bit over 20 to not much less than 40 (these figures may not be quite right – looking forward to proper report). It’s true that isn’t “extremely close”, but it is “extremely significant, a major shift”.
